On December 10th 2015, China Metallurgical Industry Planning and Research Institute (MPI) released Rating of Environmental Development of Chinese Steel Companies 2015, which was the research findings published for the first time in Chinese steel industry.There were 69 companies included in the rating system, among of which 56 companies scored more than 60 points and the other 13 scored less than 60 points. These 69 companies produced 599 million tons crude steel in 2014, accounted for 73% of total production in China, which basically represented the main stream of Chinese steel industry.
MPI's comments: Environmental development means to achieve a fundamental change in development idea instead of reducing impact on the environment by means of energy saving and emission reduction only. Business and operation of steel companies should be reviewed in different aspects such as up/down stream, society and communities etc from the viewpoint of environmental development.
Mr. Feng Fei, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the PRC stated in an interview that the implementation plan of transformation and upgrading of conventional industries is being formulated. Chinese steel industry is confronted with absolute overcapacity. The competent steel companies should leave the market rapidly.
MPI’s comments: Chinese steel industry is confronted with serious overcapacity and structural problem. The majority of backward capacity has already been eliminated considering equipment scale and process technologies. Reduction will be deemed as the core of development of Chinese steel industry over the coming years.
